Who are Jim and Holly Akenson?
Jim & Holly are biologists who manage the University of Idaho’s Taylor Ranch Field Station in the River of No Return Wilderness. These two have plowed and rolled airstrips, and pull planes out of snow banks. Packed mules caring normal stuff..... like elk quarters and abnormal things, large diameter plastic pipe, metal cages, spools of cable, long cross cut saws, wood boxes with hound dogs, and cougar carcasses.
“I expect every student I train to be able to confidently do manty packing on deckers and saw buck pack saddles and properly pack on western stock saddles. They will also know how to secure top packs using three methods, the diamond hitch the tipped up basket hitch and the D-ring diamond. “.....and I have learned there is nothing like a good mule when your life rides on it” Jim Akenson
At Taylor, they train students in practical backcountry horsemanship, riding, packing, driving, shoeing, camping with stock and emergency equine first aid, plus general wilderness survival skills.
For the last 20 years they have done extensive carnivore studies on cougars and black bears with the last 5 years research on wolves.
Developed effective methods for safely managing stock around wolves and other carnivores through several dozen close encounters on the trail and in camp. These two have investigated over 200 kills made by wolves and cougars.
Packed mules for over 30 years in all types of terrain and weather conditions.
Used and trained mule teams for packing, riding, driving for putting up hay, mowing machine, dump rack, and skidding logs for firewood.
Worked as Oregon Fish and Wildlife Research Biologist, department packer for NE region
In charge of wilderness stock support for fish and wildlife surveys and enforcement activities for Oregon state police.
Offered packing classes for IDFG officers, USFF wilderness rangers and packers.
